Deep-tech founder · Germany

Tobi builds things that move.

Deep-tech founder, generalist builder, and realistic optimist; exploring better machines, better systems, and better ways to live.

Over seven years I co-founded and helped lead two ventures across electric aviation and electrification – from a full-scale aircraft prototype to motor controllers that actually ship. After two intense founder chapters, I'm travelling, training, writing, and taking on selective advisory work while I figure out what to build next.

Origin · the flagship

A full-scale aircraft, not a slide.

The concept we chased at Atlas Aero: a two-seat, serial-hybrid eVTOL built to pair fixed-wing efficiency with vertical take-off. This full-scale prototype went on public show at IAA Mobility 2021, in front of press, public, and senior policymakers.

Concepts, products, a stubborn lawnmower, and the science it all started from.

Peer-reviewed

Liquid-repellent coatings

Peer-reviewed research

Before the hardware, there was chemistry. My master's research became a peer-reviewed paper on durable, ionic-liquid-based, liquid-repellent surface coatings. Read the paper →

The story

I build to leave the world something cooler and cleaner than I found it – usually by helping take an idea most people would call unrealistic and turning it into something you can actually stand next to.

It started with a project-management module on a semester abroad in Brisbane, where I mapped out "how to build an aircraft prototype", mostly because my brother was already sketching one.

Back in Germany, with a master's thesis left to finish, I had the safe options: consulting, or a well-paid engineering job. Instead I jumped into the cold water, took the whole non-technical half of the project, and became a co-founder.

I still finished the science, too; my thesis work was published in the Journal of Materials Chemistry A.

Advisory

Not why this site exists. Still worth saying.

I'm a registered solo entrepreneur and open to selective work where it's genuinely useful: funding and grant strategy, hardware positioning, founder sparring, and the occasional board or advisory seat. Especially for ambitious, slightly unreasonable, climate-positive ideas.

Field Notes

The current chapter.

Right now I'm somewhere warm with a board or a kite nearby. A month in Sri Lanka turned into an IKO-certified kitesurfer; now it's Bali and learning to surf, strength and yoga most days, and a small AI server humming away on the side.

Field Notes is the log: travel, water, training, and building, written like notes from the field rather than lifestyle content.

Building something ambitious, technical, and a little unreasonable?

I'd like to hear about it. Best for deep-tech, electrification, mobility, funding strategy, and better ways to live.

Tell me what you're building, where it stands, and what kind of help you need.
